
Keeping Things Warm (and Safe) in the Steam
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or any high-moisture spot isn’t just about chasing away the chill. It’s about not playing Russian Roulette with your electricity. Water and live current don’t get along, and standard heaters usually give up the ghost pretty quickly in these environments. That’s why we stick with IP55 enclosures and explosion-proof quartz tubes. It’s basically a shield that keeps the moisture away from the parts that could actually hurt you.
Why the quartz matters
Most cheap heating lamps use thin glass. Big mistake. We use heavy-wall quartz because it can take a beating. Think about it: you’ve got a tube sitting at 600°C, and a stray drop of cold water hits it. Standard glass would just shatter. Quartz doesn’t. When we call these “explosion-proof,” we really mean they can handle the pressure and the wild temperature swings without popping. We also seal the ends with high-temp gaskets. This keeps the halogen gas inside where it belongs and keeps the steam out.
Dealing with the damp
An IP55 rating sounds like a boring spec sheet, but in plain English, it means the unit blocks dust and handles water jets without breaking a sweat. In a shower, steam gets into everything. If that moisture pools on the terminals and bridges the gap between the wires, your breaker is going to trip—or worse. The IP55 shell does the dirty work of keeping the wiring bone-dry so the quartz tube can focus on the heat.
The catch
Here’s the thing: these units are incredibly fast. You get that instant, glowing heat without waiting for a coil to warm up. It feels great. But there is a trade-off. Because the heat is so concentrated, the surface getshot. Really hot. You can’t just slap these on any old wall. Make sure your mounting brackets and wall materials can actually handle that kind of radiant load, otherwise, you might find your fixtures warping. One last tip: wire it to a dedicated GFCI circuit. Even with the IP55 protection, these lamps pull a lot of power. A clean draw means no flickering and a much longer lifespan for the bulb.
