Here is a common mistake: thinking that the biggest, most powerful heater is always the best choice. It’s not. If you go overboard with the wattage, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill and turning your bathroom into a sauna. But go too low? You’ll be shivering in the shower. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between the size of your room and the materials you’ve got on the walls.
The Space Factor
If you have a tiny bathroom—you know, those little powder rooms under 4m²—you don’t need a monster. Something in the 400W to 600W range usually does the trick. It’s a small space, so the heat doesn’t have far to travel before it hits you. But if you’ve got high ceilings or a sprawling master bath, you’ll want to jump up to 800W or 1200W. One thing to keep in mind: tiles and stone are heat sponges. They soak up warmth and hold onto the cold. Because of that (and those drafty windows or exhaust fans that suck the warm air right out), I always suggest adding a little bit of a buffer—maybe 20% more power than the math says you need—just to be safe.
The Trade-offs
Here is the thing about short-wave infrared lamps: they don’t actually heat the air. They heat you. It’s an instant, cozy feeling. But be careful. High-wattage lamps can get intense. If you hang a 1200W unit too low, it’s not “cozy” anymore—it’s burning. You have to balance how much power you’re using with how high you mount the lamp. And a quick heads-up on the electrical side. More power means more draw on your system. Check your breakers. If you’re putting a few of these lamps on one circuit, you might trip a breaker if the load isn’t balanced. Nobody wants the lights to go out mid-shower.
Getting Your Money’s Worth
If you want to actually feel the heat without running the lamp forever, look at the reflectors. Cheap reflectors are a waste. They can send up to 30% of that precious heat right back into the ceiling where it does nothing for you. Get a high-quality reflector and center it right over where you actually spend your time. When the rays hit you directly, you can turn the heater off sooner. Simple.
