
Why we use explosion-proof quartz for bathroom heaters
Bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, freezing cold tiles, and sudden temperature jumps. If you’re putting a heater behind a mirror or up in the ceiling, you’re dealing with a recipe for “thermal shock.” Think about it: a tiny, cold drop of condensation hits a searing hot glass tube. With regular glass, that’s usually when things go pop. It cracks. It shatters. It’s a mess. That’s why we stick with explosion-proof quartz.
The science (without the textbook)
Quartz is just tougher. It doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings from zero to a hundred in a few seconds. While other glasses expand and contract violently—which is how they break—quartz just handles it. We use a reinforced wall on these tubes so they can take a beating from the moisture and the heat without giving up. Plus, it’s efficient. The infrared heat hits the mirror surface directly. It doesn’t waste time trying to warm up all the air in the room first. You get that heat exactly where you need it, right away.
Keeping things safe
When we say “explosion-proof,” we aren’t talking about a bomb. We’re talking about containment. If a filament burns out, you don’t want the tube to break or leak. In a damp bathroom, that could lead to electrical arcing, and nobody wants that. We make sure the seals are airtight because moisture is the number one thing that kills these heaters. One quick tip: make sure you’re wired into a proper GFCI circuit. These lamps pull a lot of power to clear that fog quickly, so your wiring needs to be up to the task.
A few things to watch out for
The best part about these lamps is how fast they heat up. But there is a catch: they gethot. Really hot. Because the quartz reaches those temperatures so quickly, you can’t just throw them into any old fixture. If you use cheap plastic brackets, they’re going to warp or melt. Stick with aluminum or ceramic mounts. It keeps everything stable and, more importantly, keeps your bathroom from smelling like burnt plastic.
