
Keeping Your Class 100 Fab Actually Clean
If you’re running a Class 100 cleanroom, you know the nightmare of particulate shedding. One tiny flake of material and your whole batch is trash. The problem is that most standard heaters just aren’t built for this. They outgas or start peeling the second they hit a thermal cycle. That’s why we stick with high-purity synthetic quartz IR lamps.
Why Quartz?
Here’s the thing: we use fused silica with low hydroxyl content. It sounds technical, but all it really means is that the lamp won’t dump contaminants onto your wafers. Unlike those metal-sheathed heaters that oxidize and flake over time, quartz stays put. It sends short-wave IR radiation straight to the target. You’re heating the part itself, not wasting energy heating up all the air around it. It’s cleaner. It’s smarter.
Getting the Setup Right
When you’re planning a fab upgrade, it’s a bit of a balancing act. You have to weigh your wattage against how much room you actually have in the heating chamber. We’ve got various lengths and voltages, so they usually slot right into your existing power rails without a fight. But watch out for the connection points. That’s usually where the mess starts. We use precision-machined electrodes and tight connectors to stop arcing and keep metallic dust out of the equation. If you’re swapping these into an old rig, just double-check your wiring. High-wattage tubes pull a lot of current, and you don’t want to blow a power supply on day one.
The Trade-offs
Now, let’s be honest. Quartz is chemically clean, but it’s brittle. It can’t take a beating. You’ve got to be careful with your mounting brackets. If the tube vibrates or rubs against a metal frame, it’s going to crack. Simple as that. Make sure there’s no mechanical stress on the glass. One last tip: don’t just crank it to max immediately. Give it a slow ramp-up for the first few cycles. This burns off any leftover films from the manufacturing process. Once the lamp is “seasoned,” you’ve got a stable, particle-free heat source that just works.
