
Why Ceiling Infrared is the Way to Go for Drafty Changing Areas
If you’ve ever tried to heat a workshop changing area with a standard forced-air heater, you know the struggle. You’re basically paying to heat the air, and then you open a door and all that expensive warmth just floats right outside. It’s a waste. That’s why we stop trying to heat the air and just heat the people. By mounting infrared heaters on the ceiling, we skip the middleman. These units send out waves of heat that go straight through the air and hit solid objects—your skin, your clothes, the workbench.
That “Instant Warmth” Feeling
It’s a different kind of heat. Instead of waiting for the room to slowly warm up, you feel it the second you step under the unit. It’s like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. We set these up with a high output because nobody likes that “cold shock” when they’re trying to change gear. You want to feel warm now, not in twenty minutes.
Getting the Setup Right
We usually arrange these in a grid so you don’t end up with any annoying cold spots. But you have to get the height just right. Hang them too high, and the heat doesn’t hit you hard enough. Hang them too low, and you’re basically baking the person standing directly underneath. It’s a bit of a balancing act. Then there’s the hardware. You’ll mostly see quartz or ceramic. Quartz heats up fast, but it’s fragile. If your shop is a high-impact zone or has a lot of vibration, go with the shielded housings. They’ll last longer. One more thing: these things pull a lot of power. Make sure your electrical panel can handle the surge when they kick on, or you’ll be spending your morning resetting breakers.
Creating a “Warm Island”
The best part about this setup in a high-traffic changing room is that you can create a warm island in the middle of a freezing building. Your main HVAC doesn’t have to work nearly as hard because you’re only targeting the spot where people actually stand. Just keep in mind that this heat doesn’t “stick” to the room. Since you aren’t warming the air itself, the second you flip the switch off, the warmth vanishes. But for a place where people are just popping in and out? It’s perfect.
